Cingular Launches BroadbandConnect 3G Network
Any real-world results to share yet?
Throughout the following week I got consistent download performance in excess of 500K.
First impressions are very good. I'm still in my evaluation period, but it looks like I'll keep it.
Do you have the Sierra card? Do you like it? I hear there is a Novatel or a Kyocera card. I would like that one more, because I would be scared of breaking that Aircard antenna...
i tested that card before i have the novatel. i see no difference in RF performance even with the antenna and thus the speed.
just for people to be careful they should just get the novatel becuase it has the internal antenna instead of the external one that could break with the sierra.
Plus if I really wanted I can use a High-gain antenna.
I don't like the novatel because it is stuck sticking out. It can't be replaced and it is low profile next to the laptop. You can get better performance by moving the tip of the sierra AC away from your machine.

The reason Verizon doesn't do voice over EVDO is that they can't - DO stands for Data Only - UMTS-HSDPA offers both voice & data capability. I tested a card at a customers location & had speeds of about 825 KBS.
You are only partially right on what you have said. EVDO does indeed only support data and not voice, while HSDPA supports both. However, EVDO can support voice through VoIP. All that voice would do is be converted into data packets and reallocated as voice on the other end of the transmission. The only problem is, EVDO rev. A is the revision that is required to support VoIP and Verizon currently uses rev. O.
no the main reason is that they are doing EV-DO REV O, which doesnt let you do anything with voice, BUT REV A does. (VOIP)
Last week in Houston I was able to access HSDPA and the speeds were fantastic. This week I can barely access EDGE.
I've talked with others and it appears that there is some signal strength or penetration issues. That's right it is tough to get a signal from inside a building.
Go figure. Whodda thunk we'd wanna use it inside too! 🤣
I'm in Houston too and get great speeds in town (with the VZW card) but it gets flaky in and around fringe areas (Montgomery County, Fort Bend COunty, etc.)
my connection rairly goes to 1xrtt, unless there is no ev-do coverage in that area.
"Sometimes, I move my notebook a couple of inches to the left or right, and that makes the difference whether I get broadband access or national access. It's weird. "
this shouldnt happen. this might mean that there isnt really truly ev-do coverage there becuase it wouldnt go back on forth. you are basically on the edge and that is why it goes back and forth from DO to 1xrtt. it happened to me before but until ev-do was put in this area i dont get it anymore.
