Any real-world results to share yet?

Would love to hear about real-world results with the PC cards that Cingular is offering. I have the Verizon EVDO service and it is pretty fast, but the latency sucks - it slows down software VPN connections substantially, and is probaly one of the reasons voice over EVDO isn't offered by VZW (just my opinion). Supposedly Cingular's connection isn't as latent. Any input from early adopters?

latency on my ev-do connection runs around 100ms. which is great compared to the 300ms on my old 1xrtt device, and worlds better than the 800-1100ms i got on gprs/edge. but still not as nice as the 25ms i get on my home connection.

Latency on my EVDO connection averages about 250ms. About 125ms to the source and 125ms back to me.

Yes, I picked up a card on Wed 11/23 & had an opportunity to test it in Chicago on that Friday night. I was shocked by the performance. My first test was over 1mb. I didn't believe it & ran six different tests with multiple test points. all tested between 1mb & 1.5mb down. That said the upload was only around 100K.

Throughout the following week I got consistent download performance in excess of 500K.

First impressions are very good. I'm still in my evaluation period, but it looks like I'll keep it.

Thanks for sharing your results. I really want to pick up this card, but with my job footing the bill for the Verizon EVDO card, I can't justify it (yet!! 🙂 )

Do you have the Sierra card? Do you like it? I hear there is a Novatel or a Kyocera card. I would like that one more, because I would be scared of breaking that Aircard antenna...

the sierra isnt a great one becuase it has that external antenna which is very possible to break it. i have the novatel and i think others should get it too. i think the sierra is a horrible card that shouldnt even be sold.

well i know plenty of things about the sierra card. (perhaps not from cingular but from sprint)

i tested that card before i have the novatel. i see no difference in RF performance even with the antenna and thus the speed.

just for people to be careful they should just get the novatel becuase it has the internal antenna instead of the external one that could break with the sierra.

Yes, I'm using the Sierra card. So far the ant. seems like it should survive.

The antenna is precicely what I like about it. First of all it CAN be replaced. Second I can leave it in my laptop and stick my laptop just about anywhere.

Plus if I really wanted I can use a High-gain antenna.

I don't like the novatel because it is stuck sticking out. It can't be replaced and it is low profile next to the laptop. You can get better performance by moving the tip of the sierra AC away from your machine.

The reason Verizon doesn't do voice over EVDO is that they can't - DO stands for Data Only - UMTS-HSDPA offers both voice & data capability. I tested a card at a customers location & had speeds of about 825 KBS.

You are only partially right on what you have said. EVDO does indeed only support data and not voice, while HSDPA supports both. However, EVDO can support voice through VoIP. All that voice would do is be converted into data packets and reallocated as voice on the other end of the transmission. The only problem is, EVDO rev. A is the revision that is required to support VoIP and Verizon currently uses rev. O.

"one of the reasons voice over EVDO isn't offered by VZW"

no the main reason is that they are doing EV-DO REV O, which doesnt let you do anything with voice, BUT REV A does. (VOIP)

Well I've had mine for 3 weeks. When it works it is great. When it only wants to connect to EDGE it makes me wanna puke.

Last week in Houston I was able to access HSDPA and the speeds were fantastic. This week I can barely access EDGE.

I've talked with others and it appears that there is some signal strength or penetration issues. That's right it is tough to get a signal from inside a building.

Go figure. Whodda thunk we'd wanna use it inside too! 🤣

It's funny, I have the same sort of problems with VZW's EVDO card. Sometimes I get Broadband access speeds (up to 1.2mbps 😁 ), and sometimes it kicks down to National Access speeds (the 1XRTT speeds, usually 60-80kbps). Sometimes, I move my notebook a couple of inches to the left or right, and that makes the difference whether I get broadband access or national access. It's weird.

I'm in Houston too and get great speeds in town (with the VZW card) but it gets flaky in and around fringe areas (Montgomery County, Fort Bend COunty, etc.)

hey, i dont have verizon's ev-do, however, i do have sprints' DO. i experience around 900kb/s-1.5mb/s. on the cell edge i get around 700kb/s.

my connection rairly goes to 1xrtt, unless there is no ev-do coverage in that area.

this shouldnt happen. this might mean that there isnt really truly ev-do coverage there becuase it wouldnt go back on forth. you are basically on the edge and that is why it goes back and forth from DO to 1xrtt. it happened to me before but until ev-do was put in this area i dont get it anymore.
