While Cingular's marketing tries to ignore the term WCDMA, HSPDA is a WCDMA variant, which means that it should be able to handle voice calls as well as data.

They're not trying to ignore the term WCDMA. Why would you call HSDPA WCDMA? Would you call EDGE GPRS? No. It's an improved upgrade over WCDMA so there is valid reason why they should (and do) "flaunt" the term HSDPA.

I hope you're not suggesting that they will cripple the voice capabilities, because that is so far off. The amount of bandwidth HSDPA hogs would be incredibly wasteful, not to mention costly, if they didn't utilize both the voice and data capabilities of the technology (like it was intended to). HSDPA increases call capacity, improves call clarity, and increases coverage per tower. Cingular will not be passing up the entire other half of the benefit HSDPA offers.

Perhaps by not enabling 2-way video calling.
I've been hearing from very reliable sources that Cingular's 3G network will not support video calling - at least not at first.
Personally, I couldn't care less - I think video calling is silly - but I'm sure some people will miss the gee-whiz factor of it and complain.

I can see that, but I wouldn't exactly call that crippling it. Crippling would be to purposely hinder one of HSDPAs abilities. Not offering a potential feature is an entirely different story.
I agree, video calling does seem very pointless.

Video calling will be delayed - they have to further update the backend piece of the network that transmits the larger amounts of data that will be used with UMTS/HSDPA. If they had video calling from the start then the network would perform too slowly & no one would be happy.

Yes, I believe EVDO rev. A does support VoIP.
There still remains a difference between HSDPA and EVDO however. EVDO is only capable of data, but fast enough speeds can be utilized to provide VoIP. HSDPA is capable of both voice and data simultaneously. So when you're in the middle of a data application, say browsing the internet, you can answer a phone call and never leave the browser. VoIP is just an alternative option for HSDPA that will lower voice costs, but isn't entirely necessary.

HSDPA does support voice. HSDPA is capable of both voice and data, unlike most other technologies (i.e. EVDO). HSDPA is such a bandwidth hog that Cingular has to utilize the voice aspect of it or else they are wasting incredible amounts of money on bandwidth, and that is a costly thing to do.
HSDPA also improves coverage area, call quality, and network capacity. Cingular isn't going to pass up the opportunity to increase the reliability of the network.
HSDPA will support voice, you just kind of have to have a phone that supports it before you can do ...
