$60--promotion price--a month?

Okay, I can see business users being okay with their company ponying up the $60 a month for this service, but what about everyone else? Unless you are a hard-core laptop-in-the-coffee-shop person, I can't imagine that anyone could afford (or want to afford) this.

I pay around $45 for my cable internet. I could see paying a few dollars more for a service I can take anywhere, and use anywhere, at least when they launch 3g in my area (Madison, WI)

i have the cable internet at home, my blackberry for other uses, and this pc-card situation for on the go.. if one is a person like me, i think they will be able to do this.. yes they pay more money, however, there is a premium with mobility which is essential.. when wimax or highier data speeds come out i think cable modems will be gone. What's the big idea about price? You're practically paying the same for Cable or DSL. Besides...the air cards are aimed at professionals. The folks that CAN afford it.

Yea, but cable and/or DSL is a lot faster. I use Verizon DSL and it is 3Mbps (down) / 768Kbps (up), Cingular's 3G service is 400-700 Kbps (presumably, both ways). So its not really a replacement.

It'd be like paying for both Premium Cable and Satellite TV---you're essentially paying double for the same thing, even though you get a little extra by having both (Satellite goes down, you've got Cable; you've got Cable, but you've also got stuff unavailable on cable, like NFL Sunday Ticket, on Satellite).

And everybody that's responded seems to agree that its mainly for business ("paying the price for mobility"--I hope you're using it for your profession rather than just always being able to post to phonescoop).

See, I would like thi...

They're price matching Verizon. If you think $60 is a lot, think about $80 back when Verizon first launched EVDO.

I'm predicting we'll be seeing a data price war coming on very soon, which will lower those costs quickly enough.

Negative. Both these companies are spending a large amount of $ to upgrade their tech to enable this they cannot afford to lower the prices. Not at least until we see the next resolution which will only take a couple years.

You're correct in that they need the money to meet the cost of the network itself, but if more people are willing to pay $60 as opposed to the few that were willing to pay $80...well let's just say they'll be making that money back a whole lot faster.

Why did Verizon lower their price from $80 to $60 a few short months after launch? Simple. Not enough interest in an overpriced product...

Actually they didn't lower the price, its still $79.99/mo for Broadband. Now if you have a Verizon Wireless voice line and agree to a 2 yr data plan for unlimited THEN you can get it for $59.99. They also have a plan for $59.99/mo unlimited on the 1x system only.

Yeah, but umts/hspda is gonna have to be in'a lot more places than 15-20 cities b4 that happens, which is gonna delay the price war 'til well into '06.

Dsl is gettin' really cheap, cable is gettin' really fast.. so payin' $59 fo' wireless broadband is a pretty big speed or price premium ta pay for mobility. So i think that price has to come down b4 a lotta peeps jump onboard. Even $49 fo' unlimited data would be huge.
