I agree with your business-centric thoughts. It is apparent that the industry goes after revenue streams churning out variations along established themes. True global wireless potential will be achieved by adopting all available protocols (quad band voice/tri band data) rather than packaging carrier specific technologies. I appreciate different folks want/need different types of phones, but it seems there is more emphasis in the states for "created markets" rather than addressing real needs. I wish Nokia would market more of their upper tier phones here as well. But I'm guessing that many of Nokia's products don't support the business goals of the carriers.
