Windows 9?

So they are just skipping over the number 9 like it doesn't exist? Unacceptable. I bet they're just upset that the gypsy who has a pad at 34th and Vine wouldn't sell them a bottle of love potion number 9. 🙄 Yeah, that's the reason!

Well Blackberry went from 6 to 10, and Apple has been stuck at OS X since 200 (ostensibly pronounced 'oh ess ten' even though the previous versions used Arabic numerals and everybody I know pronounces it 'oh ess ex').

Version numbers never make any sense.

Keep in mind, they pretty much skipped 5 & 6, at least from a marketing standpoint.

Windows 3.0
Windows 3.1
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows ME
Windows NT 3.51
Windows NT 4
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows 8

And more from Microsoft:
XBox
XBox 360
Xbox One

I do not pay much attention to gaming consoles, and I honestly thought Xbox One was the first generation of Xbox, similar to the PlayStation1 concept.

Last year it drove me nuts, people would come in asking if we had X Box One and I would say 'Microsoft hasn't been manufacturing the first generation X Box for years....' and then I would yet again catch myself 'oh right, the X Box One is the newest one....stupid Microsoft calling the third generation 'the one''

That happened like, 6 times every day to me that people would ask for the X Box One and I would forget that, on year, the 'One' isn't the first generation and think they were asking of the first generation.... 🙄

They didn't really skip versions 5 and 6.

Windows 95/98/ME were basically the same OS with service packs and can be considered version 4

Windows NT was a different OS and doesn't apply.

Windows 2000 and XP are essentially the same OS and constitute version 5.

Windows Vista is version 6.

So, there you have it.

As far as actually skipping version 9 is concerned, my guess would be that they developed it to be too much like Windows 8. After all the Windows 8 backlash, they scrapped the project and decided to do version 10 instead. But that's just my guess.

Perhaps they went to Windows 10 because they are porting the successor to Nokia Belle to all those platforms and wanted a clear numeric break to go with the "new" OS ;). They bought out the Nokia handset business for a reason and it wasn't for the cool clasping hands splash screen.
