While data ON the phone might be encrypted, any data stored in the "cloud" is still unprotected. And this still allows the "cloud" providers (Google) to snoop all they want.
GMail is not encrypted. Google has no interest in really protecting your privacy, because they need/want to snoop. Its how they sell advertising.
It is unfortunate, because Google could really push email encryption into the mainstream if they wanted. And I really wish they did.

It won't prevent it completely,probably nothing will, but it will deter all but the most committed hackers. I mean....if you have a choice of two targets, one which is encrypted and therefore requires some effort to crack, and another which has no encryption at all and can be cracked without effort, which would you choose to go after?
And I do agree with you about Google, I feel much the same about them as I do about Apple: like the products, hate the company.
