Judicious thinking

Seeing that their wireless business is coming back around to bite off chunks of their landline business, Sprint and Verizon are laying out their VoIP plans. But all this wireless, VoIP, UMA business is starting to put me off. Having managed to live through the worst hurricane in Broward County (that's Florida, folks) history, I can tell you with utter lucidity that none of that crap works after a disaster like this. What does work? Good old American landlines. And even those were compromised here and there. But it was a lot more reliable than my Verizon service, which allowed me to do jack squat (surprise!). Don't throw out that good old fashioned, cord connected, beige AT&T phone. They're worth their weight in gold.

The real circuit switched network went bye-bye a long time ago. TDM as we know it is gone.

Nearly all voice networks have a packet switched core -- even "good old american landlines". Even first generation CDMA voice systems behave more like packet based networks than they do circuit switched.

"Carrier class" VoIP is far different than vontage sitting on your home DSL line.

Packet based networks save money and offer higher capacities. We wont ever go back.

If you say so. I say we're all doomed. Call me retro.

Actually, it depends on the situation. Having lived through hurricanes Charlie, Frances, and Jeanne in Central Florida, we found the Verizon wirelines were down, while mobile phones would still work. Because the landline was down for so long, we contacted Verizon to let them know we were not interested in reconnecting.

Modern humans have survived for 150,000 years, and the telephone is a very recent invention. I doubt it will kill us to live without it for a little while.

Oh, no doubt we can live without them...I didn't own a cell phone till 2002, but man, it'd suck sending up smoke signals all the time.

Well, you could always get some string and share tin cans with your neighbors.

Understand that hurricanes affect a very small precentage of the country, maybe 5-10% (and that's being generous)

I think it's a tad bit more than that (the entire east coast, the entire gulf coast), but there are a lot of things that effect wireless communication for the worst. I'm just saying don't put away your hardlines just yet, even if they are circuit switched now (which bugs me a bit...).

He's right. Dropping a land based line is not really a good idea, even if you have voip over cable or DSL. Of the three, (Cell, VOIP, and Landline), The good old land lines are still the most reliable, and still the only way that 911 operators can locate you no matter where you live. So for those of you saying that we will never go back, I say that we will never leave it behind untill a technology that can produce the same benifits emerges. Yeah cell service has E911, but its still only available in a few areas where either the tax payers or the government has agreed to spend the money on the systems to support it. I know it's not available in my area no matter what carrier you have. And voip is still too inconsistant and not supportiv...
