in case that RIM does getban from the usa I hope that the carriers have a alternative for their blackberry customers. I am not willing to pay for another phone. I see this turning into a big problem.

The injunction may block RIM from selling their Blackberry branded hardware...but it may have a clause that allows the company to continue offering service to its current customers. And then again...maybe not. This is what happens when trillion dollar patents come into contention.

this sucks. I was planning on buying one soon. It seemed like a cool device that integrates PDA and phone in a nice neat package. not like the other ugly ones.

I wont be surprised if NTP comes out with their own product. If they had the patents why didnt they come out with a product yet would be my defense.

Can RIM come back to US with another device similar to blackberry with a different name?

no... RIMM can not sell any blackberry devices or software in the united states. (they can elsewhere but not in this country)

the reason NTP didn't develop a handset or series of handsets from this patent is b/c they aren't a manufacturer like RIM.....they are a patent holding tech company. Basically (and it seems really shady to me), they got patents for the software and then waited until RIM became huge, then cried foul stating that they were infringed. Unfortunately, shady or not, if they had the patents.....they have a right to do that.

They are called patent trolls.. and they are becoming an increasingly bigger problem in this country every day.

This is a start, but perhaps not the answer.

Huge actually... Everyone will come in on the same day (and 99% won't have heard about the injunction) complaining how Cingular/Verizon/Sprint/Nextel etc.. suck this and eat s**t that, and how they are losing like a gazillion dollars a second (they of course won't want to buy a new phone however) and we'll have to patiently calm each one down, and explain to them that NTP (and the courts, and the Bush administration ;) ) are to blame for this and NOT their carrier, and even after all that probably...

I'm sure they'll come up with something, but just out of curiosity, if they don't offer you anything for your blackberry (read: paper weight) when the injunction is enforced what are you going to do? I mean if you're not buying another phone. Would you just go without a cellphone? Etc..

Not trying to start anything, I'm just curious.

There are only a few sectors that will still continue to receive service if this injunction will stand and it is as follows; U.S. federal, state, or local governments.
