VoIP?
Somebody tell me what "VoIP" is. I see the ads alot and it just looks like a cordless landline phone that has several sets you can put around the house with each having their own charger. We have the same thing but its from Radioshack. Same thing, right?

VoIP = Voice over IP
Also known as an internet phone, allows you to use your internet provider as a phone line. Obviously, it only really makes sense for cable modems.
If you have Vonage, which is what RS carries, you have VoIP. There is a converter of some sort that connects to an ethernet port on a router to a phone jack - so you can use regular phones with it.
VoIP has pluses and minuses. Cheaper for everything; you can take it with you; but right now they still have not perfected the 911 call aspect of it.

there is one other flaw....not so important if you have a cell phone as well, though.....VoIP service like Vonage will not work if you lose power. This is logical, of course, because you cannot be connected to the internet without power.

unless you run your cable modem and VOIP adapter off a battery backup, of course. 😉 then you'll get some time before the battery dies.
also, with the 911 thing, i had no problem the one time i had to call 911. with Vonage, you have to register your address on the website, and if you move, you just change it in your settings.

I've had voip for a little while now. We have a provider called SunRocket. They offer many of the same features as the other providers and we also got a free phone system to keep.
It's been a pretty nice service to have. It's really cheap and we don't notice much of a problem with the quality of service. VoIP is definitely the way to go if you make a lot of long distance calls from your house. Oh and also, we have the second number with the area code of our choice so people can call us and it's free for them.

To combat this instance, Vonage has it setup so that if the Vonage device for your phone number cannot be found, it will forward the calls to your cell phone. Handy little feature, that.
I use Vonage myself, as my wife prefers having a "regular" phone on the house. For 911 services, we have released Vonage to supply our address for calls to 911.
Also, since it's only $25 per month for UNLIMITED calling, including into Canada, and very cheap international rates, it works out well as an addition to my wireless plan.
