I am in favor of the consumer having the freedom to take his phone to another carrier. When possible, however with the varying frequencies used by the major carriers does this even matter?

Not so much. Even Straight Talk, which roams on the at&t and Verizon networks and is probably the most open network out there, and which is the same company as Net 10 and Tracfone, offers the 'Bring Your Own Phone' program, has a long list of phones and devices that aren't compatible with the network.

But, truthfully, it is an idea that sounds better in theory than it is in reality. The truth is that for most people, their phones don't last very long, most people can't make a phone even last as long as a 2 year contract, let alone finishing that contract and then use it with another carrier. And that's even accounting for the fact that with the rate of current advances, a 2-3 year old phone is hopelessly out of date. Most people don...
