So I gotta have an HSPA phone to take advantage of HSPDA speeds?

Hum, that mmight be ok for like a new sign up but others may not be 2 happy.

Its a little like the Sprint-Nextel thing where you can't take advantage of their combined coverage until the hybrid iDEN-CDMA phones come out, and then you gotta go get a new phone.

the type of people that care THAT much won't mind shelling out money for a phone at full retail especially since they have the skills to eBay their old phone anyways

Exactly.

Why do people want the best, but don't want or expect to pay for it??

Actually, it's no different from any other company. You have to have an EV-DO phone in order to take advantage of Verizon Wireless's EV-DO coverage. You have to have an HSDPA phone in order to take advantage of Cingular's HSDPA coverage. You have to have a wi-fi card (or wi-fi enables equipment) to take advantage of wi-fi hotspots.

What did you expect? Your old phone to magically adjust to Cingular's upgraded network?

From the way the article made it sounds, seemed like some people were already on their high-speed network with the 3G phones, but those 3G phones that they had wont be able to take advantage of the HSPDA improvements.

So they had to get a new 3G phone like last year to get the 3G benefits, and now they gotta go out and get yet ANOTHER phone to get the benefits of the HSPDA 3G?

If you keep your phone in pristine condition, you can always resell it on Ebay and lose little to no money. Sometimes making more than you even paid for the phone.

I don't know bro. Whenever I sell something used, it always seems to go down in value, not up. Also seems like kind of a hassle, even if I could somehow come close to breakin even.

But whatever works for you personally.

You had to get a new phone to take advantage of Verizon's "3G" 1xrtt, and you had to get a new phone to take advantage of Verizon's 1xEV-DO. No matter which company you choose, the result is the same, if a something new comes out, you will most likely need to purchase or upgrade equipment for it.

I'm not on Verizon (not yet anyway) so I didn't have to buy no new phones from them.

I"m just sayin that if you guys at Cingular are going to make me buy a new phone every year to keep up, that isn't something I like too much.

Btw, whats "1xrtt" and how many years has that been around? I don't remember hearing that term too much, but I don't know the whole cellular glossary yet.

1xrtt is the "Enhanced Network Area" that is not part of "Broadband Access" (or something like that). 1xrtt is the step before 1xEV-DO in Verizon's upgrade path. I think they had it network wide in 2001, but I may be mistaken.

When Verizon gets EV-DO Rev A, the next step, you'd have to acquire new equipment to keep up. Cingular is no different. Cingular will not shut down its GSM network just because it has HSDPA. Plus, UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA is the most efficient technology deployed, so I don't thing Cingular will dump it anytime soon.

HSUPA? Damn. So does that mean that if I finally get my HSPDA phone, I'm gonna have to dump that too and go get a HSUPA phone?

You don't have to do anything. You choose to do it. If you choose to be 'latest and greatest', that's your choice.

Either you have an anti-Cingular, pro-Verizon bias or you are in desperate need of some further reading on technology.

Verizon recently came out with EV-DO. If you don't have a Motorola E815, LG VX8100 or other recent phones, you DON'T have EV-DO on your phone which means you are not up to date when it comes to data technology. Cingular is going to skip the UMTS only stage and jump right into UMTS with HSDPA upgrades. Verizon is going to come out with EV-DO Revision A and Cingular is going to come out with HSUPA.

So PLEASE don't act like Verizon is not doing the same thing with technology.

LOL...I thought it was for another poster to clarify that Verizon's phones don't update themselves to be the latest and greatest.

It is true, though. If you want the latest thing, you have to upgrade to pay for it. Your VCR won't play DVDs. Didn't they have this problem with TV's...when cable came out and tuners were needed to receive anything beyond 13?
