Verizon/EV-DO vs Cingular/HSDPA

Verizon claims to cover 140 million people with its EV-DO offering, but that doesn't tell you how they measure those people. If, as is typical, they're stretching the definition as much as possible they're probably counting everyone who lives or works within their coverage area. You're probably being counted if you can use EV-DO at home or at work.

Cingular claims they're going to cover 15-20 cities by the end of the year, but that doesn't tell you how many people are covered. I used the 2000 U.S. Census figures for the covered cities to come up with roughly 50 million people who live in the covered metropolitan areas. So roughly 1/3 of Verizon's "coverage".

So yeah, at the end of this year Verizon's 3G coverage will ...

I've got a bad feeling we're not going to see speeds any where close to 14mbps anytime in the next 24 months. Or any sooner than Sep. 08, but we'll have to wait and see.
I've been a voice customer with Cingular for 4yrs in January.
But stuck as data customer with Verizon until July, 07, when this contract ends, all likeliness I will take my data internet over to Cingular.
But for now, Verizon didn't waste anytime deliver us the future!!!

Yeah, you never know who is going to have the future. I can remember when AT&T Wireless was the coverage leader, a reputation they lost to Verizon Wireless, a reputation, in turn, that Verizon Wireless can lost to another company.

Remember when Cellular One was one of the best known brands in wireless? Now Cellular One invokes thought of badly run business, case studies on how to take a perfectly good product and ruin it with bad customer service. Many companies have Cellular One blood in them, including but not limited to, Cingular, Alltel, Dobson, and Verizon Wireless. At the moment, if I'm not mistaken, Alltel owns the Cellular One name (but must sell it).

Oh, in the future, one person in almost every town will own a horseless...
