The goofiest thing about this discussion is that Verizon's early lead in 3G with EV-DO has not, in fact, netted them a ton of 3G customers. Verizon isn't quoting numbers, but reliable industry experts put VZ's 3G customer base (at least those with aircards and PDAs) at less than 1/2 million. If true, this means that about 1% of their very large base is using EV-DO. This of course discounts those with DV-DO phones, but is a much more reliable measure of who "cares" about a faster network than a discussion of how many Motorola E815s have been sold. I'm sure we can agree on that. (Someone with an EV-DO aircard or PDA purchased it FOR the speed of the network, whereas an E815 buyer isn't necessarily engaging in "3G", except by default with ...

edge is a big factor with so many areas NOT covered, and will continue to be so as long as 3G is in its infancy

Sad, but true, in all reality, 3G won't really, really be mature til Summer 08, I think, that's just an estimate, about speeds, available handsets, service plans, and so on, but hey, I'm down, deliver me the future! ! !

Business users don't like to change things like carriers so of course they're gonna stay where they are with Cingular. Just gotta keep 'em happy enough to not wanna switch. Not too hard.

You have a lot of good points.

I think when wireless data really takes off is when these carriers meet up with TODAY'S standards and actually offer megabit PLUS internet, like I said, TODAY'S standards, what people expect when it comes to speeds. Right now, it's more so a convenience thing, having everywhere access, or so it is for me.

And when there are more 2 and 3 megapixel CamPhones on the 3G market also, U.S. 3G market that is, things wil start to take off then, a REAL replacement for the digital camera, at least when it comes to rez.

Anything beyond 1.3 megapixels is basically useless when the camera only has a pinhole lens.

I don't care if you put an 8 megapixel camera in my phone - if it's using a pinhole lens my 3.3 megapixel Olympus will still take better pictures.

That goes to show that you CAN'T be someone employed in the cellular industry.

It is a RARE REQUEST for someone to have the latest and greatest tech. in the cell industry. I've sold in three rather large markets for over 4 years now, and 80-90% of people "just want a phone that makes phone calls..." 1/2 million people using EV-DO, not bad!

It is only tech savvy people who use things like phone scoop and such that would be even halfway interested in aircards. Maybe businessmen, but they typically are ok w/ wi-fi laptops and PDAs.

By the way, $60-$80/month is huge revenue when you multiply that by 500,000... $35,000,000 monthly on average. Not bad for "1% of their very large base using EV-DO".

While that is not insignificant revenue, the point still stands that this is a small, new customer base, which gives VZ a statistically insignificant lead in early adoption.

No industry analyst I have heard of believes that this early lead will give Verizon total "dominance" of the 3G space. Hats off to them for being first and having a successful rollout of their EV-DO network, but so far this has not led to massive customer adoption or huge sales, nor is it likely to in the next 6-12 months. By then, both Sprint and Cingular will have large, established networks with EV-DO and UMTS/HSDPA which will be nearly, if not completely, the equal of Verizon's in coverage. (Don't forget that Cingular's native network is substantially larger t...

Geez. Yours was about the least lucid comment I've read on here in quite awhile.

Did my post not make sense to you? If so, then you need to do some reading/research.... 🙄
