Just out of curiousity, why won't any carrier launch anything new in the New York City. For example, when AT&T started rolling out GSM/GPRS, they first launched it in most of the other metro areas and when Verizon launched EVDO, they launched it in the west coast first, even though they are a New Jersey based company??????!!!!!!!

Cingular Orange doesn't have a network in NYC. Before the merger, Cingular was using T-Mobile's network. Glad that's over.

If I'm not mistaken, Cingular users will be using both networks until Cingular Blue is fully ready to be working stand-alone.

Cingular will use the blue (legacy AWS) network in NYC and will have no further use for the T-Mobile system there....

For a little while, Cingular will continue to use the T-Mobile system in New York.

From PRnewswire.com:

"Both Cingular and T-Mobile customers are unaffected by the deal, with both
companies retaining their own customers. Cingular's customers will also
continue to use the California, Nevada and New York networks for up to four
years. As a result, the transition should be transparent to Cingular's
customers."

Maybe I wasn't clear in my question. Why is it that Cingular is not launching UMTS in the New York City area? I mean, there is a huge market, especially in North Jersey and the surrounding areas.

My sentiment exactly. Let's stay on topic here; I would like an 'informed' answer as to why this market (#1 nationwide) is never among the test markets when 'cool' technologies like this are unveiled.

Easy. Its too risky. Does it make sense to make an initial launch of a technology that hasn't had time to be "tested" on a broad scale? No. If something went wrong with the launch their reputation in that huge market would be marred. So they'll wait until round two or three of the launch to make sure everything is running smoothly until HSDPA is made available in a market like NYC.
