Cingular 3G To Launch November 1
Cool! But Still So Far Behind Verizon & EVDO
Verizon 3G (EVDO):
- already in 84 major metro markets
- available to 140 million people
- avg speeds of 400-700 kbps, 2 Mbps burst
Cingy 3G (UMTS/WCDMA):
- in 15 major metro markets as of Nov. 1
- available to ? million people
- avg speeds of 220-320 kbps
Like I said, nice first step, but available to about 1/5 as many markets and at half the speed?

Its great that Cingy is FINALLY starting to get their 3G ball rolling, but they're still so far behind.

Jake, there was no way they were going to roll it out to 84 markets. You knew that. They are going to do it the same way Verizon did, which is very smart.
I'm just disappointed in the speeds. I guess I will be ...

HSDPA 30ms latency
Latency is more important for web surfing and it prevents Verizon from streaming their videos. If you have V-Cast, you'll have to download clips before watching them.
I have VCast, and it BUFFERS for 10-20 seconds... THEN it streams, that way when speeds fluctuate it can keep up. Webcasts do the exact same thing for streaming video, for the most part.
Cingular is supose to be having HBO as a content provider, so that's exciting, but time will tell.
But regarding HBO, I'm trying to think of what they have right now that ppl just HAVE to see, what with 'Sex and the City' and 'Six Feet Under' have ended their runs, and 'The Sopranos' nearing its end and taking about two years between seasons now.
I hear 'Deadwood' is pretty good. And they have some new series called 'Rome, which setting-wise sounds like a good excuse for lots of sex n' violence. I mean that in a good way. 🙂

V CAST Technology Overview
Next generation wireless technology has arrived with V CAST. V CAST uses the power of broadband. With average download speeds of 400-700 Kbps you can stream video clips (up to 5 minutes long) of the hottest entertainment, sports highlights, news and breaking weather to your Verizon Wireless V CAST phone. Increased download speed, along with advanced messaging, imaging and data transfer functions are just a few reasons V CAST will change the way you - and the world - view wireless.

HBO content will be just like HBO on your TV set, I'm assuming.
Far as the HBO content goes, if its live in real-time at the same time the show airs... that will be pretty cool.

The unconfirmed HBO stuff is supposed to be 'exclusive' content. This is stuff that won't be on HBO TV. I'm thinking behind-the0scenes stuff and probably original programming... probably 5-10 minute series.

In that case, I'm not so interested. It's still cool though.
Besides, I haven't been able to do any file transfers or anything to tell me what the ACTUAL speed of VZW EVDO is.
I would rather see what they do. People can wait an extra damn second.
