This article says Sprint's network is slow and has poor coverage. Yet the article below says the fastest LTE speeds were recorded on phones with Sprint Spark and Verizon XLTE. So how can Sprint's network be "slow" if it tied for the fastest speed.

The fastest Sprint speeds are probably in their Spark 2.5GHz markets where they had a huge amount of Wimax spectrum that has been changed to LTE.

In markets where they are running 5x5 1900 and 5x5 800 networks, their network is the slowest. Because typically TMobile usually has 10x10 or more, Verizon and AT&T typically have 20x20 or more.

It will be a lot more time until Sprint completes their Spark rollout to where their speeds and coverage can truly compete with AT&T and Verizon.

Unfortunately Bob, they're basing it on average nationwide coverage and phones capable of said technologies. Very few Spark devices and limited rural coverage impedes results.

Frankly, I find massive coverage is overrated and I've been claiming this for years.

Example: I know one lady with two disabled children in wheelchairs and she won't make a trip across the other side of the city to one of my favorite restaurants that I recommended to her because it is too far of a drive. She doesn't like to travel much. Yet, she complains about her phone bill with AT&T but won't leave because she feels she needs the coverage.

When I tell her there are four other choices she could make, she says she doesn't want to take a chance on leaving ...

Sprint and T-Mobile offer roaming in rural areas. My basic phone, messaging, and data work just fine - no LTE, but still works. Yes, why pay for something you don't need?

The big two really aren't THAT expensive - unless you're some data hog. Once you buy or pay off a device, they can get ridiculously cheap, for the kind of service they provide.

The argument you're making is "Why drive the BMW, when you could drive the entry-level Chevy and they both get you to the same destination". Frankly, the Beemer just performs better, consistently and is more "Fun" because of that.

Do I need to slam 58 Mbps and 8 Mbps speeds with my LTE? No - but when I want something fast, I'll actually hotspot to download it.

i feel the same your with AT&T and verizon your paying for reliability, where im at sprint isnt an option becaue theyre just horrible, and thats with a tower a few blocks away.

T-mobile may be fast but like it says but in rural areas its horrible and why would you want to deal with that.

i dont travel much either but when i do id like to know for a fact that imgonna have coverage, which is why im glad im with Verizon and have never had an issue with anything

I have Tmobile right now and the coverage is superb in the city. I have had instances where I do travel to rural areas... However, I travel to these locations to get away from the hectic city lifestyle. At first I was angry that I had poor to no service in these locations, now I see it as a benefit. Why do I need to use my phone when I am in the redwoods or some other location where I am hiking an epic trail. Is it absolutely a necessity to have coverage in this location. I don't think so many can make the argument that yes it is but I think I can wait to check my social networks, send a call, or text message when I get back into town. 🙂

Before the advent of cell phones, I'm pretty sure people just laid down and died. 😛

True. And I'm not saying ALL people make wrong choices. However, people are less likely to complain about their car payments than they do about their phone payments. There are many people that still feel their respective city is only fully covered by either AT&T and VZW and have no other choice. This would be false logic.

But the problem is John, until T-Mobile and Sprint start CONSISTENTLY ranking number 1 or 2 then they really aren't a viable option for the majority of people in this country!

Using the car comparison, its would be like choosing between a car that works well all over the US to a model that works well in your home city but not so well around the country! Most people would choose the model that works all over even though it costs a little more.

I chose AT&T because they work everywhere I travel and give excellent customer service. I know that Verizon is rated better in some cities but unfortunately not in mine!

So basically what you are saying is that there are plenty of people who are buying that Chevy because it gets them from point A to point B. And that in real life people who buy BMW know how much they are paying and don't complain about their car payment. They bought the BMW because they wanted that performance and comfort that they use. Where in cellphones people complain about their bills and don't know that they could pay less for the same service that they actually use. Yes Verizon and AT&T have more coverage but if you never use it then its a waste.

However, I would say that T-mobile and Sprint are not that much cheaper than Verizon an AT&T.

I am having difficulty grasping the point you are trying to make calling ATT and Verizon BMW and Tmobile/Sprint a Entry level Chevy...

In some markets that would be the other way around. What he is trying to say is why would you pay so much for service you don't need. Data hog or not. There are a lot of service options out there besides just the big 4 that offer the same level of service specially if you rarely travel outside of your zip code.

But its a convience to know that you will have service if you do travel instead of being suprised that you have no coverage with Sprint and T-mobile.

I have yet to see my T-Mobile phone roam. No coverage at all is what I get in rural areas. Or it will say "emergency calls only" while showing no service which leads me to think it will allow me to place a call on AT&T's network if it's a 911 call.

I always say, choose what is best for your region and local area. For me, I could never get Verizon signal at my house but Sprint always had full 4G LTE signal in my house and I consistently get +15mbps download speeds. My AT&T work phone stays on HSPA most of the time and I average 5-7mbps. Even in large cities I've noticed this, at least in the midwest area.

I have first hand experience that Sprint LTE coverage is better coverage than AT&T's. I can compare the two by running OpenSignal on both my work phone and personal phone. Every once in a while AT&T bursts to 30mbps on LTE but is usually in the 7-8mbps range. Sprint consistently gets 15mbps even in rural areas where AT&T drops to edge for me, I am still on LTE with Sprint.
