Why Compete?
This may or may not be their intent, but competing with Facetime directly on Apple devices is smart. If you can appeal to more users, then it would stand to reason that Skype will be the go to VOIP service, because Facetime is only available on Apple devices. Skype is multiplatform and if MS can make it as easy or better to use, they can grasp a larger consumer base and not just businesses.

As part of the 'discovery' process in their war against Samsung, Motorola and other Android OEM's, a court recently forced Apple to publicly reveal the last memo Steve Jobs sent before he retired. It was from late 2010, and not seen by anyone outside Apple until a couple months ago.
Among other things, Jobs explicitly says that Apple's strategy is to 'lock customers into our ecosystem' by making it difficult for Apple products to work together with non-Apple products.
Apple's traditional philosophy has been described as the 'walled garden', i.e. customers come in, and they can't leave because Apple products only work together with other Apple products.

True. The funny thing is, people who I've deemed as iSheep, this only applies to those I know personally and think Apple can do no wrong or that Apple products are all that matter, believe that everyone should have an Apple product instead of Apple opening up some services to other platforms.

Another section of the same document is titled 'Holy War on Google' and in it Jobs admits that the lawsuits against Samsung and Motorola are just a proxy war against Google because the popularity of Android is a threat to the iPhone.

If WP can be itunes compatible, have facetime, and access to another app market what would make people hesitate at that point?
