Or you could just buy it in the store

This is a good idea, but why go to this effort for a phone that will likely end up delivered to the wrong store (this is AT&T after all)? Just buy the phone in the store people. If they don't have exactly what you want the store will literally have a dozen other phones that will fit your needs.

I find it funny how you can order pre-order these trendy new phones, think you are going to be the first to be the center of attention with the latest status symbol, and then find that your preorder cannot be canceled, is projected to take 3 weeks to arrive, and knuckle-dragging neanderthals just walk right in the store during the first week picked it up immediately.

Sprint has been doing this for some time.
It gives the benefit of buying online to get "Web only" exclusive deals with the convenience of picking up at the store.
It saves on shipping costs for AT&T where they would normally give "free" overnight shipping.

There are a multitude of ways this is good for both consumer and company and it has nothing to do with anything "status" related

right saves on wait time for people actually there that need help, no complaining of waiing hours for a rep.

and with doing it online its gonna tekll you whether or not they actually have it in stock instead of going to the store having them check the inventory and not having it.

The computer knows if they have it in stock. I don't want to go to a store and have a sales person try and talk me into something I don't and waste my time. But I can go online pick out my phone and go and pick it up after work and not spend an hour there telling them I don't want that piece of trash iPhone 4 that really can't do anything. I just go in give them my paper and they give me my phone and I leave. Nice and easy.

Number 1 the any iPhone doesn't do anything.

Number 2 why would a phone be delivered to the wrong store? Wouldn't they use store stock to complete the order.

Number 3 yes this is AT&T and I have had great service with them. So what is your point?
