Okay I didn't verify MSRP and carrier offset pricing but the point remains, FreedomPop is a Value carrier. Do many people signing up for a $5 a month plan really want the latest and greatest phone or even last years without a subsidy?

I doubt it, and I personally am glad they arent selling current line-up phones, because if they did have high-end phones they would have tons of money tied up in equipment, and would go broke in short order. And please FreedomPop if your listening, never ever offer the arpu devouring iphone, it looks like an apple but tastes like bankruptcy.

If you want a high end handset on a $5 a month carrier, bring it yourself, which is actually the whole point of the article but (thankfully) don't expect a value mvno to tie up money in high-end handsets they will never sell.
