The only reason why the angelic warriors of Sprint and T-mobile are struggling is because they have to fight the evil of VZW and AT&T.
The government created the at&t monopoly, and the government broke it up when it was concluded that the monopoly was no longer necessary.
The purpose of the at&t monopoly was to provide phone service to rural markets where it was too expensive to build phone lines. Just as today the big issue is 'getting internet to the poor and rural communities' in the early 20th century the issue was how to get phone service in into poor, rural communities. Just as today, the problem was that the cost was so great no one could afford to build the networks. Providing at&t with a monopoly was done for two reasons:

Not entirely true. Try telling that to the thousands of rural telephone cooperatives that formed because Ma Bell was not interested in fully and expeditiously serving their areas. Hundreds of those rural coops still exist today.

Market research firms value the telecommunications industry at anywhere from 1.4 to 5 trillion dollars. Oh, woe is me, all those poor T-com companies that cannot turn a profit. Whatever will they do? How much ATT stock do you own that you would constantly spread this type of disinformation?
