What's the point?

I'd use a Treo because of Palm OS, but now that seems to be no longer an option, and this affirms it - PalmOS appears to be dead.

Ed Colligan (Palm CEO) talked repeatedly during the press conf. about Windows Mobile being an addition to their lineup, not a replacement for Palm OS.

These are totally different OS. IMHO, Windows with true multitasking support and functionality is the way to go. Interface isn't very friendly, but for PC users it's familiar. I always wanted to offer a customer different OS as an option. I know there are a lot of Palm fans out there, however, Palm is loosing it's position as a dominating PDA OS. Way to go Ed!

Competition always brings about the best in people or organizations. Unfortunately, Palm will probably go the way of Digital (DEC), Wang and many others... Leaving MS and ?

There probably are some people who have to use other devices, because they want/need the Windows mobile OS. This gives them an option - which means that Handspring is now a double threat to the PDA/Smartphone industry.

Here's an article I found today that seems relevant.

Well written article. Can Palm make it on it's own simply making smartphones. I doubt, although time will tell... This market requires laser like focus and execution, speed to market and deep pockets, ie- Samsung, Moto, Nokia etc. Palm simply does not have any of these attributes in their organizational DNA.

I have one question.

The windows mobile software has always been set up on smaller form-factored phones such as clamshells (Motorola MPx220) or non-flip (Audiovox SMT 5600). I am not sure what the reasoning has been, but these phones never accepted input from the screen (via stylus) where the Pocket PC versions (Samsung i730)have all been larger in size, non-flip and have always worked in much the same way as a trditional stand alone Pocket PC (HP iPaq's). This Treo will be running Windows Mobile 5.0 not Pocket PC 2003 or 2005. Does this mean that this SmartPhone will not be able to accept input via the screen or is Windows Mobile a fully functioning portable Windows OS?

Any Ideas.

Well that kinda stinks. I really have nothing against the idea of not having the touch screen other than web browsing. I mean you can kinda get around everything else by navigating using buttons and jog dials but hard to navigate a web page that way. I hope they reconsider thsi in future models which I am sure they are already working on knowing Palm.
If you know anything that make me think differently, please let me know.
Thanks
