I don't actually think that this is an 'advance', the fact that USB cables have to be inserted in a particular way was done on purpose, they could have made it reversible at any time, they chose not to do so because requiring that the cables be inserted with a particular orientation helps to ensure that the port and the cable don't wear out too quickly.
