After you pay full retail you need to have it active on your account for at least 60 days then you can request your unlock code

60 days? I seem to remember it was 90 days, I guess they've been loosening the restrictions recently.

If you buy it outright you should not have any problem getting the unlock code, provided you have been a customer for a certain length of time, the phone hasn't been reported stolen, and are not past due on your account.

So No...No you cannot buy the phone for $650 and get it unlocked without taking out a contract with AT&T, which seems to kind of defeat the purpose of buying it outright.

And so then after paying way more than $650 you can jump through AT&T's hoops and they May unlock it. Winning.

I'm glad those CTIA sellouts and the carriers reached that agreement that allows people to unlock their legally owned phones. Oh wait.

Does ATT not have a plan comparable to Verizon's EDGE or T-mobile's JUMP where you can pay full price for the phone and avooid being in a contract?

Yes. AT&T does have that plan. It is called Next and has full details on their website. Also, they will allow a device unlock as long as you have active service for 2 months (60 days) which entails no ETF if cancelled on day 60. My thought is, if you dont want AT&T service and just want an unlocked S5, why dont you just buy it through Samsung instead? Its the same price and is unlocked from the factory. Another way you can do this is by buying the device from AT&T at full retail and calling Samsung with proof of purchase and you can get the unlock code from them.

hope this helps

Manufacturers will often--always, from what I've seen--tell you to contact the carrier about unlocking phones. If Samsung is different, I've never heard anything about it.

You can get it unlocked but not immediately. My question is if you don't want to be on at&t, why would you get the at&t version? Buy the unlocked version and don't worry about it.

Because I got my Constitutional rights to freedom and guns and unlocked phones! I'll sue everyone who tries to tread on my rights!

Sound about right to you? This is how a lot of people think in this country. 🙄
