like i said earlier. edge isnt 3g. 3g= umts/hsdpa. (not sure why you had to make a whole thread about it.)

this was in 2004, but it serves the point...

"T-Mobile USA says no 3G until 2007"

"So basically T-Mobile subscribers will have wait until 2007 if they want 3G, but the cold reality is that a lot of them probably won’t want to wait and will defect to other carriers that have been a little more proactive about 3G."

"Mobile is currently upgrading their network to EDGE, which is like a faster version of GPRS, but they should have started doing that a long time ago. By the time they have that ready, everyone else will already be a step ahead."

so i am sorry, that my fa...

So, what is Sprint-Nextel's big data speed advantage *right now*?

well i am not comparing sprint-nextel really to tmobile but they are coming out with ev-do rev o then rev a then wimax or flarion. so they already have plans to go from 3g to 4g.

Well, T-Mobile *plans* on purchasing spectrum through auction, and T-Mobile *plans* on using that auction. Yeah, it doesn't have anything today, but neither does Sprint-Nextel. Any timeframe when Rev A or WiMax or Flarion technology will be deployed network-wide? Apparently they already have *plans*, so I would exepct they may have something more concrete than "sometime in the future"?

T-Mobile does not have 3G. EDGE is not 3G, it is 2.5G. UMTS, and HSDPA are 3G networks.

The battle over what exactly is 3G continues. CDMA carriers boasted their 3G networks when 1xRTT came to play.

EDGE is the largest fasted data network nationwide. It's definitely not as fast as EV-DO, but it definitely covers the helluva lot more area.

Whether it's 2G, 2.5G, 3G, or 4G, it doesn't really matter what category it falls into, it is important that is works.

I know it works. And lets get real, EDGE is no where near 4G! I was just telling the person what its considered. Calm down.

Nothing was directed towards you. I was just pointing out the fact how things seem to switch generations, such as 1xRTT being 3G, but now it's 2.5G.

So, my point being that it doesn't matter what "generation" it is, but it matters how the coverage area and speeds actually work together.

Sorry if I conveyed otherwise.

Not to disagree with anyone in particular about the whole 3G thing however it comes to mind that how many customers of T-mobile are thinking about this whole 3G network...not that many...and until one carrier starts advertising that they can make video calls then T-Mobile might lose some business there...but for now its ok...

I agree. I dont think T-mobile has as large a percentage of customers interested in data than they do in gadget phones and boatloads of minutes. The big three are rolling out their high speed because of the ammount of money they get from business customers (the majority of people who will buy data plans and high end pda phones). Tmobile is staying compettive by offering more minutes for less money. So I don't see tmobile putting THAT much money into their high speed network, but instead I see them pulling off of cingular and entering into roaming/data agreements, and investing the money more in other regions of the US venture. Eventually yes they will move up to 3 and 4G, but only when its fininacially advantageous to their current targ...

uh...yeah, like 2007, like phonescoop already announced. Bottome line, EDGE isn't much faster then GPRS, so 3G WOULDN'T BE much better. Lets let this rest
