Nextel made Wimax possible. Wimax was a stopgate for LTE. Sprint had a hard dealine to deploy next gen service or surrender the spectrum to the govt. Wimax was ready to launch and LTE was not so Sprint did Wimax with the knowledge that they would eventually transition to the LTE when it was time. Sprint covers more pop in their LTE then T-mobile does but TM does have superior speeds. But I've been in Spark areas and was blown away by not only the Spark speeds but the LTE speeds as well.
