I don't get why Car manufactures want to tie their cars infotainment center to one mobile OS, because cars last 20+ years. In 20 years that infotainment center could be useless because iOS is dead, or iOS has change so much it can't or wont support it. Heck even in 10 or 5 years from know that field could be completely different and then the infotainment center is dead. Why not develop a open standard infotainment center that works with all phones?
For example, develop their infotainment center to work with all phones, via bluetooth because that's one things all phones have from feature phones all the way to high end smartphones. Then add features to work with smartphones via an app that people can download and then release the app on ...

+1 totally agree with you. Plus, the market share for Apple is lowering, everybody's getting a Samsung or another Android phone
...
It's not only that but in 5 years or 10 years we could be using:
Windows Phone
Blackberry
Ubuntu phone
Tizen
Jolla
Firefox Os
Nokia Android
Amazon Android
list goes on
In 2006 it was Blackberry, Windows Mobile , feature phones
In 2014 its iPhone, and Android (they didn't commercially exist 8 years ago)
By the time these cars have been out for 5 or 10 years people are going to have to replace the infotainment centers just to connect them to their phones.

i completely agree with you guys. something like this CarPlay thing i doubt though will come as Standard equipment, but will probably be an option. and by the time 5 years comes around and if these things become obsolete, im sure the auto makers will have already found another way to skin a cat.

I would hope it would still have access to bluetooth in the cars. That way with these non-iPhones and devices down the line that may not be compatible can still work.

it' all about the money!
if there' sheep to buy it, why not. haha

The story is generalized around Apple news; not auto industry news. From what I gather, auto manufacturers are not going with ios as a standard. The article is implying that Apple is being added to the growing selection of choices for interacting with the infotainment system of the vehicle.
I would really hate to think world wide auto manutacturers are going to cater to the smallest marketshare. Even though most people are going to purchase whatever vehicle they want regardless of Apple or Android implementation, standardization helps in overall universal usage. Auto manufacturers are not going to want consumers screaming at them that the system in their vehicles is useless.

Sorry slammer. Its Apple CarPlay. Its made by Apple.
...
I realize it is. My post was to subdue the insinuations that the auto industry was implementing strictly ios into vehicles which is incorrect.
Sorry for the confusion.

Just so I'm understanding correctly, CarPlay is built by Apple as a module for car manufacturers infotainment centers, so they can work seamlessly with iOS devices?
...
That appears to be the premise. However, the manufacturers are also aware that not everyone wants an Apple product. They are not giving Apple complete control. If you support Android, you will soon be able to link to the system's basic platform with an Android device.
