FCC Says Inflight Calls a Go, But DoT Says No
Cuz we all need to hear annoying phone conversations on a plane?
How does this work then? There are repeaters on the planes that beam the call to satellite which in turn beams it down to the land stations. Technically you're making a satellite call over a cell network call. Exactly how Airphone worked and the airlines take a cut of the profit of these calls and it is a lucrative profit for them much like charging for specific seats on the plane costs them nothing but costs us passengers. Planes already have this equipment onboard as all carriers have or are upgrading and buying new aircraft so the cost is included in the purchase for them, its just about how desp...

Talking on the phone is no better, or worse than talking with the person next to you.
When speaking to one another on a plane most people speak in hushed tones because they are both present in the situation and understand that others can be affected by their voices. When someone is speaking on a phone they will be much more likely to 'forget' where they are and speak loudly or in a derisive manner. I'm sure flight attendants will be quick to get them to hush up, but there's no reason to make their (already stressful) job any harder.
In other parts of the world, flight passengers are allowed to make calls during flight, and I have never ever had a problem with people on the phone during flight. During flight, only about 8 people receive calls which are about 1-5 minutes long at most.
You've never seen that "freedom" during flight, so it's natural you're afraid of change and asume things (the worse scenario possible), but until you try you can't say it's going to be like this or that.
You never know when will you need to make a quick call to land during flight, not every phone has the hability to text (land lines, for instance).
I say put it on test trial first.
