Most of the time, you don't even need that....as long as your account is in good standing and you've been a customer for at least six months you'r almost certainly going to get the unlock code if you ask....even if the phone isn't paid off...the most popular reason people give for wanting the unlock code is international travel, and the only requirement we imposed for that was that the customer agree to add international roaming to their account....a feature for which there was no charge....when I worked for at&t, the conversation was always the same

I want the unlock code

What is your reason for wanting the code?

International travel

Okay....let me look....you have been a customer for x number of years, you haven't had a past d...

I don't see why international roaming would be necessary, cause the purpose of unlocking a GSM phone is to by a local simple card and use the local wireless network much, much cheaper.

International roaming from ATT is just them hoping the customer will rack up extremely outrageous charges that willgo ststraight to the highest ranking executive's pockets.

This used to be the case, yes. Not so much anymore. I unlocked my Lumia 920 off-contract fine. I contacted a friend in Care to unlock a Lumia 520 I got from Walmart (which I bought as a gift for my girlfriend on T-Mobile) and that worked fine.

I got an AT&T Lumia 1020 off-contract from Amazon, and went to unlock, and she said the button to get the code wasn't available. Shortly after, she got an email saying that all unlock requests are to be done through the online unlock form, which is rather unforgiving. I wasn't able to get the unlock code there despite the device being bought off-contract, and my line still being off-contract.

And apparently I'm not the only one to encounter this problem. AT&T just got a lot tougher with ...

Yup. I think everyone in the world (outside of the US) scoff at the practice and would never, ever, ever, buy a phone from the states for this and many other reasons. Folks in the us are really regarded as "prisoners" somewhat by people in most other developed or developing nations (for this and many other reasons).

If only that were how it works now. Now it is,
"I need a SIM restriction removal code."
"What is that"
"I need to unlock my phone."
"That is handled exclusively through the unlock portal on the web site. Is there anything else I can handle for you today?"
"No."

The portal always returns an error message.
