I'm telling you, Cingular won't release HSDPA in NY in this first round.
By the way, I think it's great that Cingular is launching HSDPA, that is no stupid move at all. You are wrong that they are deploying UMTS and then upgrading to HSDPA though. They made the decision and put out a press release stating their plans to launch the HSDPA upgrade in tandem with their UMTS network launch.
They won't do it.
Some of the cities include SanFran and Detroit. Research the **** and you'll see for yourselves. There's like 7 total cities that have it already launched, but its not yet available to the general public.
There's also 2 handsets out for the US 3G, one by Motorola and one from Nokia.
1. Six UMTS test cities were up and running by AT&T.
2. One HSDPA test city was up for testing only, by Cingular--not open to consumers.
3. Cingular announced that they would be launching the HSDPA upgrade in tandem with the UMTS launch. That means they are going straight to HSDPA instead of a delayed upgrade, which they haven't had consumer test markets for.
Since the acquisition of AT&T, Cingular hasn't even touched the UMTS newtorks. I don't doubt that these will be the first markets upgraded to HSDPA and offered to the public, but until then they have no bearing on Cingular's HSDPA testing. They didn't launch EV-DO in NY in the first round of release. Plain and simple.
Cinglar won't either.
I don't doubt that they will launch there soon, but they won't be in the first 15. Mark my words.
