If memory serves me correctly, that was a low altitude AMPS call made a dozen years ago. Poor example.
AMPS has been sunset in most CMAs. Digital airlinks -- especially those that are single frequency -- operate quite differently. And most calls would be made at or closer to cruising altitude. That case would necessitate a picocell on board.
