What about the Google android device manage (https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager ?hl=en&u=0) that's already out there that lets you ring, lock or erase data from your device remotely (if you set it up to do so)?

It can be thwarted by swapping out the SIM card.....the kill switch makes the device permanently unusable, even if a SIM card switch is performed.

I don't think so. ADM is married to your Google ID, not your SIM card, so switching the SIM won't help. However, if the thief can do a factory reset before the device is locked, ADM won't work.

All someone would have to do for a factory reset is press a button combination to get into the recovery and do a factory reset. Its quite easy.

Well if someone steals your phone and does a factory reset, at least your data would be safe (...ly deleted).
