Bad Move

This would be a bad move on T-Mobile's part. If T-Mobile wants to stick to only urban areas, and remain a lower carrier, fine, but if they want to expand and offer services that really can rival AT&T, and continue to support their growth, they really need lower frequency spectrum. They need better indoor coverage that competitors like AT&T and Verizon both offer. Capacity because they only have a limited amount of PCS and AWS spectrum. Just those two reasons are enough to compel T-Mobile to make a bid, but if they dont, they are in clear danger once Verizon and AT&T buys out that low end spectrum, and further have better services.

H Block is in the PCS band. They don't need PCS spectrum. They are saving for the upcoming 600MHz spectrum license auction.

Don't you think the 600mhz spectrum will be equally expensive as the 700mhz spectrum was? I believe Verizon paid $9.4bln for the 700mhz spectrum nationwide.

What kind of license will this be? Will it be nationwide? Covering 270-300m pops?

Yeah it'll probably be equally if not more expensive than the 700Mhz. IMO Verizon, AT&T and Sprint should be banned from the 600mhz auction. Not just because I want T-Mo to get it but because the bigger 3 have spectrum up their arses already it's ridiculous. Plus they have ESMR to penetrate indoor buildings.

Sprint will probably get PCS H block anyway which matches up perfectly well with their G block and they have a $hit load of spectrum as it is wi...

I'm sure DT could raise the money if they wanted to. The problem is that the bigwigs in Germany may or may not understand the need for it. In Europe, you have a greater population density, so you can cover urban areas and major corridors and hit most of the people you need to hit. The U.S. is much more spread out, which is why carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile have hit their natural growth limits with their current network configuration. I just hope the folks in charge realize this.

JJinNYC sounds a bit fanboish to me, one bidder means less money for the government, and I'm sure it will go over well when they bitch to congress that we want a sweetheart deal for a foreign owned company (or majority owned) gets a subsidized price. Let the cards fall were they may, and let the highest bidder win.

Now in saying all this, our mobile companies should maybe pool this, like some .eu companies and share it accross the carriers. OK, maybe a pipedream. But it is done elsewhere.
