I think that the one in the picture is just for ilustrative purposes (looks cool, though).
It would make a lot more sense to think that you will have to remove the back cover of the phone, along with the battery, sim card and memory card to access the interchangeable parts.

The resulting phone will be a bit bulkier, but, not so much, given modern standards.

The thing I'll be happy about for the most part, is the chance of upgrading external RAM.
Buying a cheap phone with basic 512MB, and being able to upgrade to 1.5 GB or 2.5 GB just by buying a memory module for about $30 - $60. Instead of a new phone.
Oh and being able to put a bigger battery in as well.

I think that a interchangeable display will have to be part of the frame/chassis, so an average person will be able to replace it without having too much trouble.
