Lame Review

This is the first and currently only 3G Nokia Symbian phone in the US. That alone makes it compelling. Why no mention of that in the review. There's a bit that talks about a slow browsing experience, but that doesn't mean anything.

How about video streaming? This is the only symbian phone that can do decent streaming and it's not even discussed. What about using it as a tethered modem?

Until the N95 supports WCDMA 1900, this is the best Cingular phone.

What are you talking about? The wrap-up says exactly that:

"The one thing setting the N75 ahead of the pack is the more advanced S60 platform."

Cingular has several other S60 phones - what makes this phone unique is the combination of S60 + 3G - that is not mentioned.

I think that's obvious/implied. Of course Eric did talk about the 3G capability.

...which is barely 3G. It's not HSDPA, so the speeds really aren't that much better than EDGE.

Try to stream 150K video with EDGE - it fails miserably. UMTS - No problem. It's not HSDPA, but way way better than EDGE.

Eric missed the point on 3G/S60 - he says:

"With so many capabilities, it could be hard to settle on the N75's defining feature. And that's just the problem, there isn't one."

There is indeed one. This is the only phone in the US that has both 3G and S60 OS. That is a huge deal.

This inclusion of '3G' in the N75 is a seemingly wasted effort. Who cares if UMTS is technically called 3G? It is NOT HSDPA and certainly doesn't hold a candle to either it or EV-DO.

While the rest of the American market is moving toward true 3G with HSDPA and EV-DO, Nokia seems to be taking baby steps. And why? UMTS in their flagship device is little more than pathetic.

UMTS is 3G. Yes, HSDPA is faster, but that doesn't mean UMTS is not "true" 3G. It handles streaming quite well and makes an pretty good modem. If all you want is HSDPA get a Motorola or LG with their simple OS.

So it's true? UMTS is subpar. There is absolutely no excuse for Nokia including UMTS in their flagship phone. It's crippling and ridiculous.

I though the review was thorough and from what I have seen of this handset in spec and in person, quite accurate.

The main thing negative that I noticed when I played with one in a Cingular shop was the very bulky form-factor. This was very disappointing given the emphasis these days on design and style, things that Nokia once upon a time excelled at.

As for S60 and UMTS (WCDMA not HSDPA):

1) I personally like S60 and have owned many S60 devices since they first appeared in the USA. However, when comparing phones and features, then I am inclined to say "So what?" about S60 if then phone does not harness the power of the OS.

2) UMTS (WCDMA) is a true 3G technology, but again "So what?" for the same reasons as above. Also, it shou...
