What's with all the trade-in programs?

With a trade-in program you generally receive less money, but the service is fast and convenient. When people trade in phones at my place of work, we issue them a gift card and then use that gift card for the purchase of their new phone. It allows them to pay less for the phone up front. It is much harder to find a buyer on craigslist, you have all the scrubs with their junk that contact you for a trade. (I'll trade you this pair of skullcandy headphones and a gameboy for your iphone 4s, i promise its a good trade.) Not to mention, the craigslist killers you must watch out for. Generally retail stores are a safe place to do a trade. But, I agree with you I would try to sell my phone to somebody i knew for an amount most likely larger than th...

Ah yes. Working in the cellphone field, These trade in programs are a HUGE source of income... you buy them off a customer for 140 and sell it for 300. Doubling money for the win.. People that have the money and don't want the hassle is a good deal for both parties...

Leaving hate aside. I can understand a trade in deal with non iphones, private resale of course is better. But used iphones, especially if its the present or previous model tends resell well, and if one can deal with the ebay.craig list issues, it will be worth it.

I tried it twice, got nothing but lames trying to trade tattoos and a bunch of crap when I was clearly demanding cash for the phone. Went on eBay and sold it within 5 minutes. IMO, screw craigslist.

Craiglist can be dangerous.

My friend's buddy was shot in the leg in BROAD DAYLIGHT at a Starbucks over a cell phone transaction.

He used to be deep into the buy and sell cell phone business, but not anymore.
