With a trade-in program you generally receive less money, but the service is fast and convenient. When people trade in phones at my place of work, we issue them a gift card and then use that gift card for the purchase of their new phone. It allows them to pay less for the phone up front. It is much harder to find a buyer on craigslist, you have all the scrubs with their junk that contact you for a trade. (I'll trade you this pair of skullcandy headphones and a gameboy for your iphone 4s, i promise its a good trade.) Not to mention, the craigslist killers you must watch out for. Generally retail stores are a safe place to do a trade. But, I agree with you I would try to sell my phone to somebody i knew for an amount most likely larger than the trade-in value. Trade-in programs are very convenient though.
