With a trade-in program you generally receive less money, but the service is fast and convenient. When people trade in phones at my place of work, we issue them a gift card and then use that gift card for the purchase of their new phone. It allows them to pay less for the phone up front. Leaving hate aside. I can understand a trade in deal with non iphones, private resale of course is better. But used iphones, especially if its the present or previous model tends resell well, and if one can deal with the ebay.craig list issues, it will be worth it.

Craiglist can be dangerous.

My friend's buddy was shot in the leg in BROAD DAYLIGHT at a Starbucks over a cell phone transaction.

He used to be deep into the buy and sell cell phone business, but not anymore.
