First I want to point out that is the first thing I noticed and made me really not want to even consider the phone the fact that the size of the screen is 6.3 but the quality of the display is terrible. :/ What good is a 6.3 inch screen when you can still see pixels.
The other is I want to point out the hilarity of your comparison it made me laugh for a while.

I don't think Samsung meant this phone to be a superior device. I believe it is meant to be a large affordable phone. The phone itself is only $149.99 with an upgrade while the note 2 was $299.99. The Note 3, which is rumored to be launching soon, will be the large phone with the nice specs (along with a nice price tag).
Think of the resolution of a Google Nexus 7 or any of last year's 7 inches tablets. The phone's display looks fuzzy when compared to that of new top-of-the-line smartphones. Though, the screen looks pretty nice. Keep in mind that new high-end have spoiled Eric, so, when he says that the display is not "awesome", it isn't implied that the screen is bad, at all.
