No room? Make room.

Well said Zpike. It is absurd to sacrifice core functionality in the pursuit of reducing the most irrelevant dimension of a phone. I mean, why not replace the charger with a power cord and eliminate the battery altogether? Imagine how thin a phone would be without a battery! Why not replace the screen with an HDMI port so that if someone wants to see the UI they can connect it to another screen?

It's bad enough that manufacturers are sticking these mini-laptops with grossly underwhelming batteries so that the user can brag about how thin the phone is, and now they are eliminating important things like SD slots for the same reason? It's absurd.

Of course I think the real reason SD card slots are disappearing is to encourage people to pay a premium for more built-in GB (hello Apple and their $100 16GB upgrade), and it also reduces complexity in programming apps (and we all know developers place little importance on software reliability)
