I do not get this, I love a lot of things about this phone, and others, but the lack of expandable storage is a deal breaker for me at ANY size. That said, this phone, in a much smaller screen size and overall size, with microSD would be great. Oh well.
...
Couldn't agree more, expandable storage is absolutely requred. My Pro G has it (and a removable battery). I hope this is just an aberration for this model that will be rectified with the next.

With a flagship like this, they're trying to put the largest possible battery and display into the thinnest possible body.
They actually came up with a non-rectangular battery to fit the curve of the back, to eek everything they could out of every last mm.
So I really think it was a matter of space, no matter how small the cards are.
...
The battery can't be swapped so it is off my list altogether. I swap once or twice a day. This is a deal breaker. If they all go the way of imbedded battery I'm probably off to smoke signals. This is why I have never succumbed to the iPhone nonsense.

Trading features for size should always be a no-no. When will this ultra-stupid fascination with super thin phones end? Give me a few extra millimeters of thickness, a battery, a sd card slot, and a physical keyboard. I won't mind wrapping my hands around its thickness if those things are present.
Dewalt makes a portable impact wrench. Guess what, it's almost entirely made of plastic with very few metal parts. But nobody complains that it's bulky or lacks some nonsensical premium build quality. Why? Because it does what it's supposed to do. If it were held to today's smartphone standards, you'd have a tiny, sleek, super cool looking piece of **** that was completely useless.
If we can understand that the extra size is necessary for th...

Close... I think the Note III will actually be closer to having it all. Though if I had to get a phone currently on the shelf, it would be the GSIV, hands down. But even still, neither one quite has it all because no manufacturer is currently making a high-end phone with a physical keyboard. Only when the "tiny phone" insanity stops will you see manufacturers return to putting additional hardware on phones that might add noticeable bulk.

Well said Zpike. It is absurd to sacrifice core functionality in the pursuit of reducing the most irrelevant dimension of a phone. I mean, why not replace the charger with a power cord and eliminate the battery altogether? Imagine how thin a phone would be without a battery! Why not replace the screen with an HDMI port so that if someone wants to see the UI they can connect it to another screen?
It's bad enough that manufacturers are sticking these mini-laptops with grossly underwhelming batteries so that the user can brag about how thin the phone is, and now they are eliminating important things like SD slots for the same reason? It's absurd.
Of course I think the real reason SD card slots are disappearing is to encourage people ...

I also agree with you!
I've already almost filled up a 32G microSD card on my current phone and will soon need a 64Gb one.
And "Cloud" storage isn't a viable option since I don't have great network coverage everywhere. And with no more "unlimited" data plans, I'd have to PAY to access My OWN content.
Totally Unacceptable.
