That's a pretty penny over thier initial purchase offer for Clear. Sprint has increased it's offered price by 68% from the original offer amount. Ouch!!! Although, w/ the possibility of the loss of spectrum assets used to obtain thier 51% share and bailouts as well as facing the possibility of having partner w/ a less than desirable partner (Ergen), not many were options available to them. Sprint needed Clearwire's spectrum holdings sorely.

Charlie Ergen, chairman and co-founder of Dish.
He has his own reputation. In the telecommunications business he's the reckless kid who's willing to bankrupt whoever he needs to bankrupt in order to get what he wants.

Its a done deal. I dont see this not going through. Specially after that lawsuit. Way overpriced for what they are getting but Sprint does need this spectrum its crucial to their vision network strategy.

Step 1: Pay a ridiculous premium for Nextel, chiefly to obtain the Nextel spectrum holdings.

Step2: Give most of that spectrum away to Clearwire for pennies on the dollar, THEN keep shoveling cash to Clearwire to keep them afloat.

Step 3: Pay a premium to buy back the spectrum from Clearwire that you already paid the Nextel premium for in the first place.

I'd hate to think the ACTUAL total amount Sprint has paid for that spectrum over the course of those three transactions.

There were a lot of variables that led to these events. In the end the fact that Sprint gets to keep the Spectrum required for their Vision Network Program is a relief. Well maybe its to soon to claim the victory over that but it must happen or Sprint is screwed; rather Sprint customers will be delayed in expecting better coverage in certain markets.
