That area is mostly black. How stupid. Yes it's a popular destination with the nearby Barclay's and shopping center but even so there are mostly blacks there shopping anyway. Viva Movil would have been better off in the South Bronx area or the Jackson Heights section of Queens as it would be much more closer the demographic it wants to cater to.

Sadly if some celebrity opened up a shop that was targeted at white people, they would be racist. Ridiculous.

That logic is ridiculous.

There are plenty of European and British stores and restaurants in North America.

Does that mean that a Black/African-American, Latino, or Asian cannot be a patron in their establishments?

Unless they explicitly say otherwise, then no.

I think you misunderstood his point.

Lopez's stores are to specifically cater to Hispanics. They don't hide that fact, they endorse and advertise it.

He means that, if somebody opened a store that Advertised, and Endorsed the fact that they want to specifically cater to "Whites" or Caucasians, (sp?), they would be called racist, which is true, and a huge double standard.

It's just like the issue with equal rights between men and women. Women want to have all rights be equal 100%, which I agree with, however some women also want special treatment becuase they are just that, a woman.
You can't have it both ways, a double standard should not exist. This is the year 2013, there should be no special treatment for anybody.

If it ...

You DO know that "Hispanics" also includes people with white skin, correct?

"Cater: Provide with what is needed or required."

She saw that there needed to be a cell phone store that was BILINGUAL (i.e that speaks both English and Spanish) and she filled that need.

So if J. Lo had not said that she was "catering" to Spanish-speaking people, would that have made a difference?

I really do not see how it is "racist": she is not discriminating against anyone (discrimination or prejudice based on race is what racism is). Anyone can go into that store and purchase phones.

Then why not Steven Speilberg open stores that cater to the Hasidic Jewish population? or Samuel L. Jackson for the African-American population? orJet Li for the Chinese population?
Because they have better things to do with their time and money!

What does that have to do with anything of what I said?

There are a lot of people that speak Spanish in this country; she made a store for those that speak Spanish, but you can also speak English and shop there.

That's waaaaaaaaay different from what I've heard from my friends in NY about some of the other stores and restaurants in Brooklyn, especially in Bensonhurst.

I was born and raised in NY. This type of store is:

A) Is extremely common -
B) Caters to those people who have a issue with a language barrier.
C) Obviously will accept business from any guest who comes in , but aims to help those who get treated in a very stereo-typical fashion at most stores.

I have been in wireless for 13 years and now am finally seeing something positive being done for Hispanics who may have an issue with communication. I myself speak Spanish and have been assisting customers who only speak Spanish, although it is not my mother-tongue.. What Moorehead Communications and Lopez have done is broken the mold of putting up a sign in their stores that simply say " Hablas Espanol " and actually are actively helpi...

Then explain to me why the Haitian population speaks 3 languages without a problem (French, Haitian Creole, English). They come from the same island as the Dominican Republic yet they do not use their poverty and culture as a lame excuse like the Hispanics do to not want to speak English.
These stores are geared toward the Hispanic population because of their inability, and/or resistance to learn and speak English. J-Lo has $$$$$, and is playing the PC card to further boost her image.

Going back to my previous statement it is geared towards those who HAVE a language barrier. Which believe me your so highly praised Haitian population HAD at one time while learning there other languages.

I myself speak 6 and after 29 years I have still yet to master all the others apart from English.

I am white, speak zero Spanish.... I would still shop there, store looks sweet. I wouldn't drive by it to go to another and wouldn't go out of my way to go to that store specifically, but there is no reason why a non Hispanic wouldn't shop there and buy a phone.

I see no reason why they can't cater, I deal with customers regularly that have a hard time with English. As a business owner why not market towards that segment, get an instant customer base in an over saturated industry, and still get customers of all origins stopping in when they walk by?

PS... I think they hang up here is a cultural issue for many of you, not a business issue. Don't hate the player Hate the game.

Practically all Verizon stores have personnel who speak Spanish, either natively or otherwise. If you live in US, you are required to speak, understand, read and write English. Opening up stores that cater to a particular group of people based on their stereotypical shopping patterns is racist.

"Practically all"?

If that were the case, then why would a store like this even be conceived?

"Required"?

English has yet to be an official language of the U.S., so I do not know what you mean by that.

"Stereotypical shopping patterns"

What stereotypical shopping patterns are you referring to?

There are about 400,000 spanish speaking people in Brooklyn. Plus, Brooklyn itself is the most populous of the Five Boroughs, so it makes sense to open a store there. I highly doubt that only "Latinos" will shop there. Lol.
