dont u think this will really hurt regular phonec companies like verizon b/c then u can just use ur cell phone in ur house w/o worrying about service so their would be no point in a regular phone line...

I bet BT is banking on you using them for your VOIP connection too... The Motorola website says something about "broadband, home phone, and mobile all on one bill." So I think they will try to get you either way... Maybe they will set it up to only work with BT base stations? Otherwise it seems you would be right, phone companies would lose out, and it would not be in their best interest to offer this service. I'm sure Verizon Wireless will never have it!

It might actually help Verizon . . .

I don't think they are one of the companies that is currently developing UMA, but they have a landline service in my area and DSL. On top of that, they have the best coverage in my area.

SBC is in the same situation. They own Cingular, have a landline company and also sell DSL (I think they have something worked out with Dish Network too). T-Mobile has started partnering with Comcast on their hotspots, and Comcast also sells cable phone services ...

Imagine paying a flat fee for you cell phone, local phone service, long distance phone service, high speed internet, and cable service. You'd get a discount because you're doing all of it through the same company, and you'd only have to pay one bill each month.

You can already do that with SBC as they own Cingular, and have a partnership with Dish network for cable, all on one bill....

Bundling really helps customer retention too since it makes people less likely to up and move all of their services from one company to another because it becomes more of a hassle. That is, if they bundle VoIP, Wireless, Landline, etc. As time goes on, most everything is going to be VoIP anyways because digital and data is going to replace traditional analog services. This is the transition. That's why so many telcos and such are trying to diverisfy more to cover more bases so they are not left out in the cold.

The only companies UMA will hurt are traditional landline companies...who were already being hurt by VoIP to begin with. Otherwise, UMA will actually pad cell carriers' bottom lines.

Of course, all cell carriers but one are heavily invested in landline service as well as wireless and they are going to be fighting against this tooth and nail, just watch. 😛

Actually isn't Cingular planning on launching UMA late this year?

Also, I hope when we get UMA in the US that it works with Wi-Fi.
