But sliders? I'm not so sure I'm sold on the slider form factor. I'm just not convinced these things are built to last.

believe it or not, sliders are actually much more natural to use than flip phones, and especially more natural than spinners. (note SE announced *another* spinner for the US today.)
i don't think there's any problem with durability. the form factor has been in use in some form or other for a few years and i haven't seen complaints from those markets about the mechanisms failing.

I know two people who have sliders, one of them has a kyocera and another one has a siemens, both of them have had them for over a year and both of them still work great, the only complaint is that they are both really small and the keys have to be recessed on the kyocera the siemens is ok though.
