Instead of getting these phones at a discount of $199 total and having to deal with these silly, unfair contracts for two years, I can get my phone for $629 and then take two years to pay it off, ITS TOTALLY DIFFERENT. I can't wait to upgrade my whole family and add the $100 to my monthly bill. YES, thanks TMobile, thank you!!

I really can't tell if that is sarcasm or not...

However, if it is, you do know, that based on the previous contract plans, and the current no-contract value plans, even if you paid full price for a device, like $600.00, after the traditional 2 year, (24 months) you end up saving hundreds of dollars on the new plans, right?

Do the math yourself if you don't believe me, the savings add up to be hundreds of dollars.

That entire discussion of 'savings' is based on the false assumption that there is a mark up in the monthly service costs, a specific line item on your bill that says 'cover cost of subsidy'....and that not having a subsidy would eliminate that line item,,,

That just ain't so....there is no 'cover cost of subsidy' line item anywhere on your bill.....eliminate the subsidy and monthly service costs remain the same, because the monthly service costs are based on the cost of providing the service NOT the cost of the phone that is being subsidized.

Remove the subsidy and nothing will change...except that many people will no longer be able to afford expensive phones.

All I can say to that is that the difference in price between those plans which previously offered subsidized handsets, and the current ones that do not is pretty substantial. Non-subsidized rate plans for a family plan cost at least $20.00 per month less, most of the data feature costs are cut in half,as are text messaging features.

On an account with 5 lines, all of them unlimited talk + text + data, that can mean a $60 - $80 per month difference, on the newer plans.

Right but if you think about the purchase of your phones, we all know everyone wants the newest phones... You are talking over time for 5 devices an additional $3000 expense, forget about it even if you do their monthly installment plans that is still money that comes out of your pocket.

The way Tmobile words it sounds nice on paper but realistically if you are a consumer who likes having the newest technology and usually buys a new phone every 20 or so months Contract service is beneficial for you because you are saving Hundreds of dollars on a phone.

I have Tmobile and the only reason is because I have found a way to get those Top notch phones for a fraction of the cost or else I would get a cheap pre paid service phone that cost l...

It was sarcasm and if you look at the plan cost, Sprint's prices are the same as Tmboile's before Tmobile adds all the cost of the phone onto the plan. People who like to upgrade their phones often don't save anything with Tmobile comparitively, its the illusion of savings.

when those phones are paid off you drop that additional $100. It can be cheaper for some people in the end, for me, I'd be saving like $2-3 each month after the phone was paid off. A co-worker just switched to T-Mobile for this and so far is already having issues with data in his area not working. I would have assumed the surrounding LA areas would have had good service.

Tmobile sucks with coverage outside Metropolitan areas. I have used it up and down California from Sacramento down to San Diego and I can say that the service is extremely spotty. Forget about it when I go to remote locations I might as well leave my phone at home.

So things haven't changed then lol. He thinks his S4 is defective and is going to exchange it today so I guess we'll see tonight since we're all going to see Star Trek tonight. I just want to actually see the S4 in person lol.

Oh thank you for reminding me about that. Star Trek is awesome! Ps. Have him do a factory reset, if its an issue with data and the phone settings have already been changed to where they need to be its definitely a software issue.

Have had it happen to a few of my older Tmobile phones where the factory reset fixed my phones data speeds.

I get that if we're talking about the big two of Verizon and AT&T. They're currently taking price gouging to a whole new level but when we're comparing unlimitied to unlimited (Sprint vs TMobile) the savings really arne't there

In theory T-Mobile's setup makes a lot of sense because you can clearly see what you are paying for, although in the end it may not matter since phones are cheaply built pieces of tech that can barely last 18 months without failure (assuming they aren't lost in that period of time). It's unlikely that someone will be able to use a smartphone for a 25th month.

The cellular carriers ultimately have begun to screw themselves by masking the price of the phone by bloating the cost of features. Customers now feel entitled to "free" phones whether they are due for an upgrade or dropped their existing one in a pool. You see the same kind of thing in the medical insurance industry where employers took over the responsibility of managing a perso...

These Tmobile options arent that great unless you bring your own phone when you compare it to Sprint. When you compare it to ATT and Verizon you get huge savings ofc. I am with Tmobile since they started offering the No Contract options I would NEVER buy a phone at regular price even if its on payments... Thats just retarded.
