AT&T Planning Large Summer LTE Roll-Out
motivation, not ambition...
This is motivation, pure and simple, to avoid FCC penalties, as AT&T is facing a five year buildout deadline of June 13, 2013 for its Lower 700 MHz B block 12 MHz licenses. By mid June, AT&T must cover 35 percent of the geographic area of each CMA in which it holds the B block license.
So, this is a regulation lighting a fire under the ass of a stubborn, anti consumer wireless carrier and a prime example of why wireless industry regulation is generally a good thing.

I've heard there are places in Tmo's network where all that's available is 2G EDGE, in 2013, that's just outrageously pathetic.
AT&T hogged the spectrum and now have to step up and show for it.
T-Mobile is absolutely pathetic yes. If I had a dollar for every place that 3G/4G went to EDGE and GPRS on their phones even in higher population areas, I could buy the company.

AJ: You have repeatedly ripped AT&T for sitting on the spectrum and not deploying it in the past....you cried out that AT&T should be *forced* to use it! Now AT&T is deploying the spectrum and you are calling them lazy since they are finishing deployment 2.5 months early?
really?
That you pay your taxes by April 15 because the law requires you to do so does not make you altruistic. See the parallel?
So, I am merely pointing out the reason for AT&T's currently accelerated LTE deployment. It is happening only because the FCC requires it. AT&T would sit on its Lower 700 MHz B block licenses in numerous CMAs for several more years and slowly trickle out LTE if it could.
Lo and be...

In my opinion, they are building out the LTE for the sole purpose of selling more data plans and data devices, not for public goodwill. I believe AT&T feels like if they BUY the spectrum, then they can do with it what they want.....so long as they are obeying the law. But I understand its just my opinion and you have plenty of your own opinions. 😎

No wireless carrier "BUYS" spectrum. They license it from the American people. And AT&T's utmost responsibility as a licensee of public spectrum is to serve the public good, not to serve its shareholders. AT&T easily has the financial wherewithal to do more than it does, but AT&T instead chooses to kowtow to self interested shareholders, pay dividends, etc.
In short, AT&T is a big part of what is wrong with our dysfunctionally capitalist national telecommunications/broadband system. We broke it apart 30 years ago. Then, it just reassembled itself. This...
