Oh, but the camera
I really want HTC to succeed, since I've always liked their products. However, I believe this will be HTCs latest fail due to the woefully under-pixeled camera. It's sad because it's an otherwise REALLY nice phone!|
I've seen side-by-side photos from an iPhone (I'm not a fanboy, but they do have a very nice camera) and the HTC.. The HTC does not prevail.
HTC got the camera right years ago on the original Droid Incredible. It had the things you need for good pictures: 8Mpix which was enough for details, but not so much the pics would be addled with noise. That was paired up with a large (relative to other phones) lens. Bigger lens for more light collection, good sensor for pic digitization. Bingo, we have nice photos.

I think it's more so the quality of the lens than megapixels that plays a role in the quality of a pic.

A 1920 x 1080 image would have 2,073,600 pixels. And that's as good as HD currently gets, unless you're into high-end gaming or use big resolutions in a professional environment. But for the run of the mill consumer, 1080p is it. And since your photograph isn't likely to appear on anything larger, it's quite possible that a 2M pixel camera with a good lens could take better pictures than an 8M pixel camera with a crappy lens. I'm sure some of the high-end phones take much better pictures in perfect light that the One, but it is supposed rule the day when it comes to taking pictures in crummy lighting, like your kid's dimly lit recital where they ask you not to use your flash. Dunno want pics you were looking at.
Having higher pixels doesn't equal better pictures. The 4MP camera on the One is quite nice and handles it own against the iPhone 5 8MP camera.
