The Trick to a Cheap Phone at T-Mobile- BEATING THE SUBSIDY

There is a tricky way that works if you are switching to T-Mobile or qualify for a maximum upgrade online to get a really cheap price on a phone. If you are planning on going on their Monthly 4G plan, there is a better way to do it than they will tell you in the store or on the phone. Don't try and explain this to them as they are not bright enough to figure this out.

Lets give you the example of today, March 22nd. You want to go on Monthly 4G and buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. So you walk into T-Mobile (make sure its a company owned store or company website), get their Monthly 4G plan for $60 bucks, pay $699 for the Galaxy Note 2, and walk out the door. Done. That's the way T-Mobile wants you to do it. That's the way you are supposed to...

I bought my S3 full price from T-mobile, if I was going to stay with them I would have surely like to have done it this way. Good thinking! Too bad it wouldn't have worked for me since I was buying the phone to use on another carrier.

Well Unless I did it how you said, which would have gotten me a phone for possibly $100 or so less then what I paid and once on prepaid, cancelled after a month. Hrm.....oh well!

You won't get a MIR if you do that. If you close the account, or migrate before the first billing cycle closes, your MIR will be invalidated. As per the conditions of the contract, the Required Data feature must be on the account, and active, for you to receive the MIR, usually it takes 6 - 8 weeks to get the MIRs, and when they check your account to see if it is active or not, and check to see if you have the required data, they will see you don't, and deny the rebate.

The rest of your plan woudl work though, and is a good way to save money.

I actually have gotten mine. You are correct in that you have to have the data feature on the account when they process your return, but all of mine have come back (and my friends ) fine. However, that's definitely not a bad idea to wait one bill cycle plus a week or two and then do it. Great idea.

There is a hidden cost to going with T-Mobile and that is their lack of coverage. Where you find coverage it's going to be mostly outdated, slow EDGE. Their 4G is as scarce as two dollar bills. And they have no 3G, even though they advertise they do. But they also advertise and show maps of all this great 4G coverage that simply doesn't exist.

Bottom, line you do get what you pay for. You want a budget carrier. Fine. You'll get budget coverage and service. And you'll get to deal with customer service reps in foreign countries that don't speak passable English. But if all that's fine with you and worth saving ten bucks a month then go for it.

I have to say, Jon Doh, you are 100% wrong with your statements. First off, STAY ON TOPIC. This doesn't belong under my post.

Second, did I mention you are 100% wrong again. T-Mobile has awesome 4G service, albeit probably not in your town. Now, I will give you the facts.

1) T-Mobile got the JD Powers award for best customer satisfaction for about 6 or so years in a row right until the possibly merger with AT&T. If that merger occurred, many T-Mobile employees would have lost their jobs. So their Customer service dropped to number 4. But its already climbing way up again. Yes, they have a Philipines call center, but most of my calls still go to the US.

2) Where T-Mobile lacks in coverage, they make up in roaming agreements. On th...

The only way you could successfully pull this off is if the rep you spoke with didn't do their job properly, and even in that case you would pay more in the long run.

If you want to move from a contract to a no contract plan and you are within the 14 days buyers remorse/exchange period you must return any equipment you received on a subsidy.

Another reason why it wouldn't work is because the $300 price you speak of is on a value plan and therefore a downpayment, so even if the rep didn't do their job properly and switched you to a no contract plan and let you keep the device you would be billed for the remaining $399 on the installment plan and the $200 termination fee for the contract.

so let's do the math $699 plus $200 = $899 o...

I work for T-Mo, and this guy is right. The Note 2 with an equipment subsidy is $420 in corporate stores. The $300 price is a down payment, which means you still owe another $20 per month for $20 months. If you move to prepaid, even if they don't tell you to return the equipment and cancel because you're still in the 14 day return policy, you would owe the $200 termination fee, plus another $400(20x20=400). Which means you paid $300 down, plus $200 termination fee, plus $400 for what you still owe on the phone--and T-Mobile will have signatures proving that you accepted all of that. So you're out $900 because you think you're smart.

And like someone else said, rebates take 6-8 weeks to process. If you cancel the line, you don't get ...

Yep. I work for T-Mo too, and you hit it on the head, this won't work. Inside buyers remorse you are required to return the phone, and yeah you would definately pay all those extras.

T-Mo has thought of all this, they probably pay some people big bucks to sit around and think of ways to screw the system.

I understand that you work for T-Mobile, but as I mentioned most T-Mobile employees don't understand their job. IT WILL WORK. Okay, as someone mentioned earlier, don't cancel in the first week. Everyone that has done this with me waited a month or 6 weeks anyway because they were busy. So that could be a very good point.

But guess what, I am correct. I have done this several times and have had no problem with it what so ever. I too did wait a few more weeks because I was busy and wanted to make sure the equipment subsidy went through. I just received my $50 a few days ago from the time I did this earlier this year. It took ages to process.

This simply does work, but you just don't understand it. However, I would agree with you that ...

There is no subsidy on a value plan, which is what you got if you got the Note 2 for $300. You got it for $300 DOWN and $20 per month for 20 months, which means if you cancel the contract and switch to prepaid, you owe that $20 per month for $20 months immediately on top of the $200 termination fee.

But, hey, it's your credit that's getting ruined when all that goes to a collections agency.
