Nice thinking about switching carriers, but again, you are missing a big piece of the puzzle. First, you usually don't get that huge $400 subsidy. Maybe on their sale phone of the week, or some odd Thanksgiving day promotion. But even so, there is something even bigger than the subsidies, and that's the new expensive plans.

For example, Tmobile has unlimited talk, text and 5GB of 4G data for 69.99 with no phone subsidy. AT&T for the same plan (and the networks are so similar as they share each others towers in so many neighborhoods) is $140. (69.99 for talk, 50.00 for 5GB and 20 for text). So over a two year contract, offering the same services, you will save almost 2000.00 on T-Mobile.

So, if you move to AT&T (at today's rate plans) and get the exact same rate plan, except with a phone subsidy, you may save 200, 300, or if you just happen to hit it right with the right phone sale, 400. Or you can just buy the phone yourself and save 2000.00. We need to remember that the subsidy is only once slice of the pie. If you bounce from carrier to carrier, you will keep getting the newer and newer rate plans that seem to be getting worse and more restrictive.

Right now, as of the date I am typing this, AT&T is giving 400 off of the note, but you would be paying 2000 more in services for the equivalent service. Soo...lots more to think of.
