The industry will change the carriers will not have to pay high commissions to their agents for acquiring new customers and subsidizing phones.
One of the previous post spoke about prepaid being 3G not 4G on some carriers. It is like that on Verizon Wireless for smartphones. An iPhone 4 or 4s on a post paid plan is $100 for unlimited talk text and 2 Gigabytes of data, the same plan prepaid is $70.

But, seriously here. Inflated pricing is all in perspective. As it stands, manufacturing costs of say $175 are set in line with the subsizing costs. If every carrrier did away with subsidizing, consumers would start to shop for the cheapest handset and this would in turn drive down manufacturing costs. Manufacturers get away with it simply because they can. Essentially, people around the globe are paying higher prices for handsets because we Americans and some other countries have accepted subsidies.
